  • Venezuela shoots down two planes suspected of drug smuggling

Originally published on October 22, 2013 The Venezuelan Air Force shot down two planes suspected of drug trafficking over the weekend after they ignored orders to land. According to local reports, the actions occurred in a remote area of the southern state of Apure, about 350 km south of Caracas, near the border with Colombia. The aircrafts were allegedly smuggling drugs from Central America and refused to follow orders from military pilots. Both planes were intercepted and taken down by F-16s. According to the BBC, earlier this month, a bill was approved to authorize such actions against illegal planes. The second plane was taken down after he allegedly evaded the authorities' order by trying to land on an illegal airstrip in the jungle. The photo of one of the destroyed planes w...

Air Force Officials said, "A plane en route from Venezuela and loaded with cocaine crashed into the Caribbean Sea while being pursued by the Colombian air force." The unidentified body of a man, found with a Mexican passport, was among the wreckage of the plane, which crashed into the sea off Colombia's northern coast. "The airplane, a Hawker 600, which left Venezuela and was destined for Central America, was detected in the early hours of today when it illegally entered Colombian air space." The armed forces are searching for further debris on land and in the ocean. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/Ya-6PW95Oqc/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

When Stewardesses Were Hot and Jets Were Cool! The Mile High Club Hugh Hefner style: A fascinating look inside the glamorous Playboy jet 'Big Bunny' in the swinging Sixties (complete with wild discos, onboard showers and air hostesses clad in leather). In the late 1960s Hugh Hefner was in his prime and his magazine empire was at its peak with around a quarter of US college men reading Playboy each month. What else would an extravagant magazine publisher want to do than buy his own giant private jet to live out the A-list lifestyle? Naming the plane The Big Bunny, Hefner proceeded to transform the $5.5 million (£3.65 million) stretch DC-9 into his dream party jet, with on board showers, a round bed covered in fur and even a disco area for Mile High soirées. Venezuela confirmed on Friday it had shot down a suspicious civilian plane off its Caribbean coast near the island of Aruba but denied any violation of international airspace. Authorities on Aruba, a semi-autonomous island that is part of the kingdom of the Netherlands, had said on Thursday a plane being pursued by Venezuelan jets went down off its coast, with human remains and packages of drugs visible in the water. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino told reporters that Venezuelan planes shot down the aircraft, which first landed in Apure state, and then ignored communications on takeoff. Padrino gave no more details of casualties or what the plane was doing. The Venezuelan government has, though, for several years operated a shoot down policy against suspected drug planes. http://feeds.r...

The BBC quoted him as saying "These are drug trafficking mafias which intend to use our country as a platform for drug distribution, trespassing our airspace," Both accidents show the Venezuelan government's efforts to prevent drug-trafficking flights over its airspace since President Maduro issued a public warning to drug smugglers, the BBC reported. In 2013, a total of 11 unauthorised planes have been disabled on the ground by the Venezuelan Air Force.

This was no normal jet, which became apparent from the moment guests were greeted by the air hostesses on the tarmac. Girls were trained at the Continental Airlines' stewardess school and unsurprisingly were bunnies who had worked at Playboy clubs in Chicago and Los Angeles. And there were no dowdy hats or frumpy skirts on this flying party plane, with specially designed uniforms featuring leatherette black mini dresses. Of course bunny ears and tails were part of the accessories, along with black boots and white scarves bearing the Playboy logo. 'Stewardesses used to look like Bond Girls; now they look like your mother,' Hefner wrote in the Wall Street Journal. 'The Jet Bunnies' costumes were very James Bond-like.' Instead of mass-produced budget airline food, Hefner and his celebrity clientèle dined on lobster and roast beef in the 38-passenger plane's lounge area. There was even a bar and a cinema area, so the Playboy founder could be fully entertained for the duration of the journey. And while the party raged inside, the bunny sign illuminated the night-time skies, as spotlights on the wing tips bore the iconic rabbit. Hefner even had special permission from the Federal government to paint the plane black so it stood out from other jets. Hefner had a luxury bedroom on board which featured silk and fur covers, and there were also showers and a powder room for freshening up. For six years the Big Bunny was used for transporting the publisher between his homes in Los Angeles and Chicago, along with going on holidays around the world. While dating his then-girlfriend, Barbi Benton, the pair visited Germany, Kenya, London, Monte Carlo, Spain, Kenya, and Italy with friends. 'It was a great toy and it was a great gift to give. I lent it to Elvis Presley to fly to concerts and I lent it to Yul Brynner,' he said. And it wasn't just celebrities who got to ride in the private jet. When the Vietnam War was coming to a close, Hefner said his plane could be used for helping transport around 40 orphaned babies from San Francisco to their adoptive parents across America. Once Hefner splashed out on his famous Playboy mansion in LA in 1971, his need for the party jet lessened. The black jet took to the skies until 1975, when it was bought by Venezuela Airlines, and later flew as a commercial airliner for Aeromexico until 2004. Hefner said in the WSJ: 'When anyone asks me if I ever miss the plane, I reply, 'Only when I fly.'
